CrystaLac CLEAR Wood Grain Filler dries virtually transparent. As a result every bit of the wood’s color (stained or not) shows through nicely.
Filling the wood grain before top coating, helps to eliminate those distracting little pock marks where the finish didn’t completely fill the pores. Simply rub it in and trowel it off to remove the excess. Paste left behind in the pores will level the surface, so you can lay down a silky, glass smooth finish.
You can tint it with water soluble dyes or just a dab of latex paint colorant (available at most paint stores).
CrystaLac Wood Grain Filler is compatible with most topcoats.
It is recommended to check compatibility on a scrap piece of wood before doing an entire project. Shellac cannot be applied over the Grain Filler. Harsh lacquer solvents can melt the filler if applied to heavily.
Directions for Best Results:
Use one to two coats of sanding sealer first to bring out the wet color of the wood. Sand, then apply Crystalac Wood Grain Filler. You can rub it into the pores with a lint free rag, or brush it onto the surface and trowel off any excess. Thoroughly dry 2 to 4 hours. Sand smooth and remove any sanding dust with a vacuum or compressed air. Wipe with a damp cloth (water only) and reapply as needed. Do a final sanding and then apply your choice of CrystaLac Top Coat.
General Staining - Stain bare wood as directed. If using a solvent or oil based stain, allow ample time for it to thoroughly dry making sure all solvents have evaporated and oils have cured.
We suggest using a water based stain for a much quicker and more environmentally safe process. After staining, apply wood grain filler. Sand and reapply if necessary. You can stain over the Crystalac Wood Grain Filler if any of the stain was sanded off initially. Apply a topcoat and you’re done.
For an even grained look, apply Crystalac Wood Grain Filler first then stain. This will work similar to a stain conditioner and not allow the stain to penetrate and appear darker in the deep wood grains.
About Crystalac and Becker Labs:
Derek Becker went to paint school in San Francisco, CA where he learned how to formulate all kinds of coatings. He worked as Head Chemist and Formulator for several companies before Crystalac was born.
The family owned and operated business all started in a barn in Candler, Florida. The barn is where all the magical formulations began. Not only did Derek make paint, he made all the mixing equipment and machinery to make his batches with.
He had a successful business going, supplying paint and finishes to several local companies, when decided in 1989 to move to Mountain City, Tennessee and opened up their family business called Becker Labs. That is where the manufacturing plant for CrystaLac products was built and is still operating.
The company is now run by Dorinda, the youngest daughter of Derek who has been working along side her father for the past 18 years and now carries on the family brand.
CrystaLac Top Coats are made with the highest quality ingredients and everything is Environmentally Safe! Making all Eco Friendly products that are easy to use and extremely durable plus great customer service, has always been top priority for the company.
CrystaLac Waterborne Finishing Products are premium grade acrylic and polyurethane resins using the latest waterborne technology. These finishes can be used in place of nitrocellulose lacquer, polyurethane, or varnishes and can be applied to wood, metal, or ceramic products. They dry rapidly to form a crystal clear, hard, durable finish. CrystaLac finishes are designed to be used right from the can and are perfect for use with high volume low pressure (HVLP) equipment or can also be easily brushed.
